Making A Piñata

Have you ever seen or tried to break a piñata?  Piñatas are made of papier-mâché in a variety of shapes and sizes.  They have candy or other prizes in the center.  They can be used for decorations at parties and other celebrations.  However, the majority of the time they are used as a traditional part of birthday celebrations in the Mexican culture.  Children take turns trying to break open the piñata with a stick to have candy and prizes fall out for them to collect.  In this activity you will read step by step directions to help you make your own piñata.

Directions:

1.   Print out this page before starting this activity.

2.   Click on the link  Making a Piñata .

3.   Print out the page with the step by step directions.

4.   Ask an adult for help before you start the project.

5.   Collect all the materials you will need.

6.   Follow the steps to make your piñata.

7.   After the piñata is dry either use it for decoration or fill it with candy.

8.   Ask an adult for help in hanging the piñata and breaking it open.

How you will be graded:

Your teacher will expect you to read and follow the directions for making a piñata.  You will be assessed on the completion of your piñata.  Your teacher will also expect you to share your opinion during a class discusssion of the making of your piñata.  (Were you successful?,  Did the final project turn out the way it was supposed to in the step by step directions?, If it didn't, why not?)
