Getting to Know Arizona
Teacher's Guide
Introduction
This lesson plan was developed as part of the Amphitheater School District
Technology Literacy Challenge Fund grant. The purpose of the program is
to provide teachers with a way of learning about technology and in turn
provide students with the best teaching practices and curriculum through
technology. This lesson plan was developed as part of the program's TLCF
Web Guides, which are a series of web-based lessons designed by teachers
to provide students with on-line educational opportunities.

Come travel through Arizona as we look at state symbols and geography.
Also learn about some famous people and places of Arizona.
Lesson Objectives

Students will be able to analyze locations, regions, and spatial connections
recognizing natural and cultural processes that impact the way in which
people and societies live and interact with each other.

Students will become familiar with the Internet by going to different sites
looking for information on a Scavenger Hunt.

Students will describe the social life in the Arizona territory and the
legacy of famous people and places.
Arizona State Standards

SS1 E1 Understand and apply the basic tools of historical research,
including chronology and how to collect, interpret and employ information
from historical materials.

SS3 E2 Describe the Impact of interactions between people and the natural
environment on the development of places and regions in Arizona.
Including how people have adapted to and modified the envionments

Standard 3 Geography-- analyze locations, regions, and spatial connections
recognizing natural and cultural processes that impact the way in which
people and societies live and interact with each other.

Arizona Scavenger Hunt
This lesson introduces students to the state symbols including, bird, tree,
flower, flag, and nickname. This lesson also helps students feel comfortable
using the Internet and several of the commands necessary for later lessons.

Two
For this activity, you need
to have Acrobat Reader downloaded on your computer. If you do not,
here is a link for you to download it.

Instructions
This activity helps focus students on the geography
of Arizona. They will print out a map of Arizona, and have to analyze
it and locate 8 cities/towns on the map. Depending on the quality
of your printer, you may want to print it out and make copies for them.
Then, after locating the towns, they need to pick one and make an advertisement
on the back of their map.

in Alphabetical order. Some are links to that towns homepage.
This site then will be used for the third part of Activity 2. The
students can choose a link to a town's homepage in order to get information
about that town for a poster advertising it.
Touring Through Tombstone
This Activity is all about one of Arizona's most famous
towns: Tombstone, Arizona. During this journey into Tombstone,
students will learn about some town history, the infamous Fight at OK Corral,
and some of the people involved in making Tombstone one of the most interesting
towns in Arizona.
