Clearwater
At last descending from the Bitterroot mountains, the party had their first encounter with the helpful Nez Perce near today's town of Weippe, Idaho. Lewis wrote about "the pleasure I now felt in having tryumphed over the rocky Mountains."
Cultivated fields show in striking contrast on the Weippe prairie. The Corps descended along the small tributary which cuts the gorge at the right, leading down to the
Clearwater River.
A lovely airport sits at river level on a bend of the Clearwater River at Orofino. Just five miles to the west is the location of Lewis and Clark's "Canoe Camp," where they found huge Ponderosa pine logs to hollow out for canoes.
Looking upstream on the beautiful Clearwater River, the North Fork enters on the left.
