Snake River

The Clearwater River, flowing from right to left, joins the Snake River entering from the left. The sister cities that flank the Snake River are Lewiston, Idaho on the right bank and Clarkston, Washington, on the left.
The Snake is a major waterway now. Here a tour boat cruises past colorful bluffs.
Symmetrically eroded ridges make a striking pattern along the Snake.
A farm sits alone on rolling grasslands atop the massive bluffs of the river.
The flow of the Snake is now controlled by a series of dams like this one, Lower Granite Dam. 200 years ago this whole river system contained numerous rapids presenting constant challenges to the Corp of Discovery.
A gravel strip nestled on the bank of the Snake is too inviting to pass up.
The strip is wide and well maintained. Looking at the river, I wish I had my fishing tackle.
The Snake cuts through rugged country just before its confluence with the Columbia. For us it is comforting to have a highway along the right bank for landing in case of emergency.
