| In 1819 Fort Atkinson was established on a riverside bluff where Lewis and Clark had their first council with Native Americans, the Otos and the Missouris. The Captains called this site the Council Bluff, and it is north of the present day city of Council Bluffs, Iowa. The Missouri flowed at the foot of the bluff when Lewis and Clark were there, but the river has long since moved eastward in its meanderings. | |||||||
