St. Louis, Gateway for the Expedition

The expedition begins! The Rialta RV camper (the Captains' traveling base camp) is shown here in rendezvous with the Citabria at St. Charles Municipal Airport near St. Louis for the beginning of the expedition.

The beautiful Gateway Arch marks St. Louis as the gateway to the west. The Citabria is a great aircraft for aerial photography. It is very maneuverable and the side window can be opened to get clear shots.
The modern heart of the City is flanked by Busch Stadium (home of the St. Louis Cardinals) on the left and the Rams football stadium (marked TWA) on the right.
The confluence of the Missouri River (coming in from the left, view is to the north) and the Mississippi River is just north of St. Louis. An island of the Mississippi is in the foreground. Remnants of recent flooding can be seen in the fields just to the north of the Missouri.
A modern tugboat pushes several barges through a controlled canal parallel and to the east of the main channel of the Mississippi. Note the levees on either side.
Historic St. Charles was a small town full of poor but friendly inhabitants where Lewis, who had been delayed in St. Louis, met Clark to regroup for the journey. Frontier Park, at the river's edge, commemorates their visit.
