Last night, Governor Ducey declared a victory for Prop 123. It is an important compromise that gets additional funding to our schools and staff immediately.

At this point, Arizona public schools are to get an adjustment for this current year in June of 2016 to use immediately in support of teaching and learning. The passage of Prop. 123 settles a seven-year legal battle on inflation funding and will infuse approximately $3.1 million into the Amphitheater Public Schools’ annual budget.

We are committed to providing as much support as possible for our schools and employees and most of this funding will go towards increasing teacher and staff compensation across the District. This means that Scenario A (from contract language) would be implemented. We have heard rumblings about a lawsuit to stop the implementation of Prop 123, but at this time we plan to begin implementation as soon as we receive the funding.

We hope that this vote will signify to the Legislature the need for continued conversations on adequately funding K-12 education in our state. The fact that the vote was so close does not mean support for education is lukewarm. In fact, according to Expect More Arizona, numerous polls show that support is at an all-time high. Many education advocates simply wished to address education funding in a different way.

On behalf of district leadership, we want to thank you for your commitment to serving our students and community. It’s because of the dedication of each and every one of you that we are able to provide our children with the best education possible.

Thank you for all you do for Amphitheater Public Schools.
