Ms. Terre Miller
My name is Terre Miller and I am the new art teacher at Cross Middle School. I joined the Cross team this year, and feel so lucky and proud to be a part of a school that takes pride in the arts. While I have been an art teacher for 17 years, teaching is my second profession. Prior to teaching, I was an illustrator and designer for nearly 15 years, traveling and designing national and international resort wear. That opportunity allowed me to explore the field of multicultural arts in a first hand way, and has allowed me the opportunity to bring many wonderful cultural experiences into the classroom, sharing and unifying our world by promoting a diversity of creative thought.
Defining Moment in Education
Art Education is an awesome field. I am not sure I ever had an “ah-ha” moment when I realized that teaching was a field that I would pursue. Rather, it was more progressive. Educators and professionals that were always actively involved in the learning community reared me. Education, as a career, was a natural fit. Sharing ideas and concepts was just a part of a stimulating environment that I grew accustomed to.
Core Educational Belief
I believe that art education provides life skills for students. Art elements include key elements in a young person's personal, social, and creative education. Art skills promote creative thinking, hands on problem solving, and life skills needed for future growth. Art education emcompasses support in other core disciplines including language arts, social studies, mathematics and science.
Teachers get the chance to learn far more from their students than they could ever teach to their students. The field of education always allows all of us lucky teachers to constantly learn. I love learning and I love teaching how to learn. Students teach me new things all the time. I love teaching the creative process by being a part of the creative process. I as an art teacher I get to witness and be a part of a student’s inner thought process. Sharing ideas and concepts with students promote constant learning.
I have been teaching for 16 years with the Amphitheater School District. I taught art at Rio Vista Elementary School for 16 years and prior to that taught at Quail Run Elementary School. While teaching for Amphitheater I have also taught for private organizations as well as guest instructors at the University of Arizona in the Department of Fine Arts.
Prior to working as a teacher I worked as a national and international resort wear designer and illustrator for over 15 years. I have illustrated various imprinted apparel as well as advertising specialties world-wide.
