REACH is the Amphitheater School District Gifted and Talented program.  lt serves the needs of those students identified as gifted in the verbal, quantitative, or non-verbal areas.

REACH is an acronym for Realizing Excellence through Academic and Creative Help.

    REACH Curriculum Objective

The Amphitheater School District's REACH curriculum is designed to provide its gifted and talented students with opportunities to: become effective future problem solvers, positive contributing members of their communities, provide an understanding of their own power to impact the world, and to encourage a path toward self-advocacy and self-actualization.

    REACH Benefits

Students who attend REACH enriched classes learn specific content and processes that are significantly more complex in nature than the content and processes learned in standard classroom.

The products and presentations that they develop are also different in that the products are produced more independently and with a greater emphasis on qualities appropriate for gifted students.

Arizona's Department of Education has mandated by law that Gifted students are to be recognized in Arizona as having special needs that require services beyond the regular classroom. Identification is based upon performance on state-approved ability tests. For more information on Arizona law and state-approved tests, go to http://www.azed.gov/gifted-education/

Students who score at the 97th percentile and above in one of three areas—verbal, quantitative, or nonverbal reasoning—are considered gifted by Arizona state law.

Tests used in Amphitheater Public Schools are:

    • Cognitive Abilities Test  (CogAT)—grades 2-12
    • Raven’s Test of Progressive Matrices—grades 2-1
    • Naglieri Nonverbal Ability Test (NNAT)—K-12
    • Otis-Lennon School Ability Test (OLSAT)—K-1

Students may be referred for gifted testing by administrators, counselors, teachers, psychologists, and other students. They may also refer themselves.

Testing procedures are continually being evaluated in order to ensure equity for all students. Testing for gifted services is done at each school at varying times throughout the school year.
