Walker is dedicated: Walker School is one big family and we dedicate ourselves to every child for life! In 2016, I spent hours and hours after school writing a grant for some fantastic technology for the kids to use in kindergarten. Our K team worked hard getting that grant! Then there's other hours of dedication making new tie dye field trip t-shirts for the kids every year - that's a lot more fun, but, whew, it's still a lot of work! Giving up planning time to work one on one with a student might be my favorite example of dedication. I love my little ones!
Walker has experience: Our Kindergarten Team has been teaching together since 2010! There's a lot of experience and teamwork right here, and we do pretty much everything together. We have Rene Pierce (who moved to K in 2003), Lori LaRussa (who moved up to 2nd in 2016), Jennifer Powers (who moved to K in 1994), me (I moved to K in 2010), and Monica Bermudez(who moved to K in 1995).
Walker is committed to educational excellence: In 2013, Mr. Michael McConnell led Lulu Walker Elementary School in celebrating 50 years of excellence. Mrs. Evelyn Carswell-Bing. Walker's first principal in 1963, demonstrated her lifetime commitment to educational excellence by joining us for our ceremony!
Walker is the #1 Elementary School in Science: What's that? We're the TOP SCIENCE SCHOOL in all of Southern Arizona? Yep~ That's right! We won even more trophies than this, but we couldn't manage to wrangle everyone together for the photo after the huge Southern Arizona ceremony at the Tucson Convention Center. A big shout-out to Mrs. Smith and Mrs. Cordell for their leadership in science! We love science!
Walker's arts program is tremendous: Our arts program includes some amazing and diverse productions! We have shows going on all year - indoors, outdoors, in our rooms and up on stage. In 2013, we even did a teachers' production of The Grinch and the students loved it!
Walker is a kind school: We focus a lot on acts of kindness. The kindergartners sang ~and signed~ a song about kindness for one of our kindness rallies. Tucson's Mayor Rothschild came to Walker to congratulate us that day on our leadership in the hugely successful Tucson Be Kind Challenge.
This is our beautiful Be Kind mural, but it's the kindness in the words and actions of our children and staff that really stand out.
In the end, of course, it's all about the kids and their joy of learning.
Walker's kind kids melt my heart!
