The Personal Statement is often required for more selective universities, and it is an essential component of th Common Application used by many private universities. And, though it is optional for many state schools, if you have the opportunity to write about yourself it is strongly recommended that you seize the opportunity and present yourself in an interesting, appropirate and compelling manner.

- Don't wait until you're approaching a dealine to begin writing - begin drafting your Personal Statement the spring of your junior year
- Check previous Common Application prompts or the resources below for potential topics
- Proof your work well, and have a teacher or other adult proof your work
