REACH Roles: I am the advocate for gifted students at Canyon del Oro (REACH - Realizing Excellence through Academic and Creative Help). As such I work with teachers, counselors, and parents to meet the needs of gifted students.   Freshmen and sophomore REACH students are served through Pre-AP English classes.  I teach Honors Internship (101 and 102) preparing junior and senior honors level students for college entrance and careers.

International Baccalaureate Role: I also teach International Baccalaureate film. This course is a two year elective open to IB diploma candidates.

I am a passionate believer in students and the value of education to our world. Each year students reinspire me.

My Odyssey teams continually inspire me with their outside-the-box thinking, team work and persistence regardless of challenges.

I am inspired each year when the students who have studied interviewing skills in our internship classes tell me about the scholarships they are getting because they are better at interviewing than their competition.  Students tell us that what they learn in internship is critical and they are getting jobs, scholarships and entrance to advanced programs because of their ability to communicate in a formal interview.

Core Educational Beliefs

My instructional style is the result of experience, training and my instructional beliefs. Training in brain-based approaches to instruction has instilled in me the value of brain functions to store and use information and the immense value of student engagement to that process. I have taught Kindergarten through 12th grade students and those varied ages have helped develop my instructional strategies, i.e., when to use direct instruction and for how long, the power of modeling, and the importance of practice in all its varied modalities. My training and experience are informed by a passionate commitment to the individual needs of each student. The “art” of teaching is to understand and act upon each student’s needs in terms of content level, motivation and individual style of learning and expression. There is no greater reward to any teacher than witnessing authentic growth in students.

Prior Experience

I have taught gifted students in 4th through 12th grades.  Most of my career has been spent in the gifted program at a vareity of schools in Amphitheater.  I have also taught visual arts.  I have also been a Career Ladder Facilitator and  in this role I mentored other teachers.
