Graduate of the University of Arizona Teaching Degree from Prescott College Gifted Endorsement 2007 Recipient of the Rodel Exemplary Teacher Award

Melanie Derksen

About Mrs. Derksen...

I can hardly believe it but this is my 27th year of teaching, and I can truly say it continues to be just as rewarding for me today, as when I began 27 years ago.  I am a native of Tucson and graduated from the University of Arizona and received my Education degree from Prescott College. In 2009 I obtained my gifted endorsement, and now I teach K – 5 students as a Gifted Specialist.  In 2007 I was lucky enough to be awarded with the Rodel Exemplary Teacher award; I am very humbled to have been given such a rewarding honor for teaching.

I am the very proud mother to three children. Sean, Tim, and Maggie, and have a wonderful husband Pat who is also a very dedicated teacher. I also have a dog, Bo Bo, who keeps us constantly happy with lots of love and licks.

I look forward to another wonderful, exciting and creative school year. Please view the district REACH website if you have any other concerns or questions about the gifted program that I don’t offer on mine. Or please don’t hesitate to contact on email or the numbers listed above.

What is REACH?

REACH is Amphitheater district's name for gifted services.

To be identified for gifted services, a student must score in the 97th percentile or higher on at least one area of an ability test.

The test we use covers three areas of reasoning:

  • Verbal

  • Quantitative

  • Nonverbal

Students scoring in the 97th percentile or above in at least one area are designated Gifted, and receive REACH services as long as they remain enrolled in an Amphitheater school.
