Ms. Melissa Scolman
Welcome to 6th-8th grade Resource Language Arts! My name is Melissa Scolman. I went to Wilson K-8 for 7th and 8th grade as a student and have never really left. I volunteered at Wilson while I was in high school at Ironwood Ridge, and came back throughout my years at Northern Arizona University. I love the Wrangler community and am so excited to be teaching here! I started teaching at Wilson as the K-2 Resource Teacher, then switched to teaching 6th-8th grade Resource Language Arts in January 2017.
Defining Moment in Education
I have wanted to be a teacher since I was in kindergarten, and I don't have one "defining" moment that helped me decide I wanted to be a teacher. Every chance I got throughout elementary school, middle school, high school, and college, I spent teaching kids. I volunteered in classrooms, worked at summer camps and daycares, tutored, spent time in every classroom I could, and kept dreaming about my own class that I would have someday. I love teaching, and am very thankful to be able to work at Wilson!
I believe that all students can learn and grow, through guidance and support from teachers, parents, and other adults in their community, as well as through the shared learning experience of other students. Learning is done through multiple means and with the support of many individuals, the most important being the student. Participation in their own learning is crucial for student success. Learning should be accessible and lessons should be relevant to the students' current life and future goals. All students should have the opportunity to learn and grow. We are a team, and should work towards success and growth together.
