Mr. Adam Upmann
Welcome to my website! I am Adam Upmann and I have been teaching since 2013. I currently teach Course 1 (6th grade math), Algebra 1, Geometry, and MATHCOUNTS here at Coronado.
Defining Moment in Education
I do not have a singular defining moment in education, however I saw my teachers as the parental figures that my own life lacked during my years in foster care. A huge reason I went into teaching is so I might be there in the same way for my students as my teachers were for me.
Core Educational Belief
I believe that students need to collaborate a lot in a math classroom. I also believe that productive struggle is okay in order to learn, even if it is hard for me to watch. I also believe that it is my duty to teach students how to learn to make them more successful and independent as they progress throughout school. It is my goal to challenge students daily, but ultimately, I am there for them as much as I possibly can be. My approach to math is to take it day by day without much emphasis on long-term projects. An ideal day for me is 15-20 minutes of direct instruction and then 20 minutes of ALEKS or independent time with 10 minutes of flex for reteaching, enrichment, or personal choice time.
