"Reading should not be presented to children as a chore or duty. It should be offered to them as a precious gift." — Kate DiCamillo

My teaching experience ranges from New York City to Ventura, California; from third grade through high school. I’ve taught art, social studies, and language arts in departmentalized programs, self-contained and multi-grade classes. My life as a librarian began when I found a closet of books in a school with no library. A group of students helped me turn that little closet into a wonderful reading nook with shelves of books scrounged from yard sales.

As school librarian, my role is to help students find themselves in the books they read, to assist them as they connect with books to inspire and challenge them, books to encourage them and open the world for their imagination. In addition, librarians guide students through the world of research: how to find relevant information and how to use that information responsibly.

Defining moment in education:

To me, the best part of my work is the little moments when a student discovers THE book that thrills their imagination, when a student just has to stop by to share an event from last night’s reading, or when a student realizes the connection between what was discussed in class and their real world. After more than 30 years in education, my newest pleasure is when former students reconnect, and I get to see what amazing adults they’re becoming.

Core educational belief:

Students learn best in an inclusive, respectful, and welcoming environment; they thrive when education is relevant and collaborative. As teachers, our challenge is to help students recognize and value their abilities as part of the learning community. As librarian, I support classroom instruction and offer further learning opportunities.
