Tucson, Arizona (March 15, 2018) – For the fifth consecutive year, the Canyon del Oro (CDO) High School Academic Decathlon team won the state championship, beating 39 other schools from across Arizona. The team earned a total of 47,304 (out of a possible 60,000) points and 27 medals, beating second-place Hamilton High School by more than 2,000 points. CDO will represent Arizona at the United States Academic Decathlon in Frisco, Texas from April 19-21.
Piper Gray, the highest scoring student (out of nearly 350 competitors), earned 9,536.9 points and 10 medals, setting the all-time Arizona record. Gray’s score also earned her a place in the top ten scores in the 50-year history of the United States Academic Decathlon. Carter Hollings, who is only a freshman, earned the highest score in his division, earning six medals in the process. Zach Hobby finished second in his division, earning four medals. The team members also garnered more than $4,000 in cash scholarships.
The team’s victory makes them just the second team in the history of Arizona Academic Decathlon to win five consecutive state championships, the other being Mesa Mountain View (1990 – 94). It is also their eighth state title overall. The CDO team also won top honors in 2006, 2009, and 2011, and were state runners up in 2007, 2008, 2010, and 2012.
The team consists of Piper Gray, Chloe Penna, Kailee Savage, Allienna Nezelek, Carter Hollings, Isabell Gray, Zachariah Hobby, Javier Lopez, and Michael Cox.
