Three Amphitheater Schools Named
A+ Schools of Excellence

February 24, 2025 – Three Amphitheater District schools have earned the prestigious A+ School of Excellence Award, the highest state-level recognition given to public schools. The awards were announced by the Arizona Educational Foundation (AEF) on Friday.

The Amphitheater schools are Innovation Academy (pre-K through fifth grade), Cross Middle School and Canyon del Oro High School.

“A+ designation isn’t something that simply happens,” said Brett Bonner, AEF’s Director of Professional Development and Dean of the AEF Academy. “It’s the result of unrelenting dedication to excellence in all areas of education, innovation, and community involvement.”

Hundreds of schools apply for designation each year, according to the Arizona Educational Foundation. The application process includes an online application, which is reviewed by a panel of staff and judges. Schools that clear that round go through an interview process, and if chosen to move forward, receive a site visit. Judges then determine which schools qualify for the award.

Amphitheater Public Schools Superintendent Todd Jaeger, J.D. said the A+ School of Excellence Awards highlight the District's focus on high student achievement and strong public schools.

“Today, we celebrate a tremendous achievement for the Amphitheater School District,” Jaeger said. “The prestigious designation of three of our schools as Arizona Educational Foundation A+ Schools of Excellence is a testament to the passion, hard work and commitment of our educators, staff, students, and supportive community. The recognition that Innovation Academy, Cross Middle School and Canyon del Oro High School are among the best schools in the state affirms our unwavering commitment to high standards, innovation and safe, supportive environments where every child can thrive,” Mr. Jaeger continued. “We are incredibly proud of this accomplishment and look forward to continuing our mission to inspire and empower the future generations of our community."

According to the AEF, criteria for the designation includes strong leadership that inspires collaboration and embraces professional development; high-quality teachers and staff who create engaging learning experiences and help students thrive academically and socially; a rigorous standards-aligned curriculum that encourages critical thinking and problem-solving; engaged parents and community involvement; and a student-centered learning approach with extracurricular activities and a safe and nurturing environment.
