Philosophy of Participation The Northwest League has been organized to provide an educationally sound, competitive, athletic participation opportunity for middle school students. This opportunity includes activities that are likely to be pursued by boys and girls for their personal enjoyment, both now and in the future. Emphasis will be put on participation rather than “winning at all cost”.
Membership in the Northwest League will be limited to middle schools in the Amphitheater, Catalina Foothills, Flowing Wells, and Marana School Districts.
The purpose of the athletic program is to instill and maintain certain values and objectives in the participants:
1. In developing the student athlete, academic achievement as well as physical fitness will be stressed 2. Students will master physical skills necessary in the sport or activity 3. Students will gain an awareness of other progressive skill requirements needed to continue to grow in a specific sport or activity 4. Students will develop a sense of loyalty, team play, and sportsmanship; which will have a “carry-over” effect in later life 5. Students will learn respect for the efforts, abilities, and rights of others (especially opponents and officials) 6. Students will become responsible for leadership/citizenship in school, the community, and on the athletic field
Playing Up Students will compete at grade level in all sports except expansion (overflow) teams. Exception: A student may not play up unless the receiving team does not have enough members to compete.
