Setting Up a SMART Board

An interactive whiteboard is a tool that increases the effectiveness of presentations through numerous hardware and software enhancements. In order to fully maximize a SMART Board it is recommended that it be utilized with a projector. Before the process of setting up begins it is important to consider the following factors.

-Location of computer and projector
-Will it be a wall mount, a floor stand or freestanding
-Number of exposed cables
-Height from floor (students need to reach without being uncomfortable)
-Proximity to windows (glare may occur)
-Keep away from chalkboards and dust
-Location of projector
-Type of mount for projector (ceiling, table)

The SMART Board should be as close to the computer as possible to eliminate the need for extra cables. Ideally a wall mount is preferable, however, a floor stand can be manageable. A freestanding arrangement is an accident waiting to happen and should be avoided if at all cost. Cables will run on the floor in most instances and should be taped and marked with a visible color. Traffic should be diverted around the cables to prevent accidents or injuries. When mounting a SMART Board on the wall measure from the floor to a height for your students to write comfortably. They should not have to stretch or hunch over. A stool may be provided for a few students that need extra height to write. Open windows can cause glare on the whiteboard so be careful to place them away from windows or use blinds. Dust is detrimental to interactive whiteboards and should be eliminated from the classroom if possible. Discard any chalkboards if feasible. Ideally, the projector will be mounted on the ceiling for optimum ease. With this type of mount cables are in the ceilings and walls and make walking around much easier. Mounting projectors on the ceiling require more labor-intensive work and may be cost prohibitive for some classrooms. A projector sitting on a desk or podium will work, but with students bumping it throughout the day a lot of time is spent reorienting it.
