My name is Julie Gates. I was born in Illinois and graduated with my teaching degree from the University of Iowa. I received my Masters degree in Teaching English as a Second Language from Arizona State University. I am fluent in Spanish, love to read and play the piano and guitar. My husband is a graphic artist who works at Davis Monthan. We have 3 dogs, two Corgis and a Chihuahua mix. I enjoy being outdoors--hiking, swimming, and camping. I have been a teacher for over 30 years, most of which has been at Nash Elementary. I love teaching first graders!
Defining Moment in My Education
Teaching runs in my family. My grandfather taught in a one room schoolhouse. My mom was a teacher as were many aunts. I fell in love with working with kids when I was a camp counselor and swim instructor back in high school. Teaching has been a great fit for me!
Core Educational Beliefs
I believe that every child can learn. As a teacher, it is my responsibility to determine the learning needs of my students and to scaffold instruction to best help them on their learning journey. Teaching and learning should be a joyful process. I do my best to design lessons that are relevant and engaging.
