Welcome

Welcome to Music Education at Nash Elementary School. I have had the pleasure of teaching General Music to all the students in Grades Kindergarten through Five since 2003. In addition, I teach the beginning Band Classes alongside Mr. Toru Tagawa who teaches the beginning Orchestra classes. I was raised in Elbow Lake, a small town in rural Minnesota, which had an excellent academic program as well as excellent Instrumental and Vocal Music programs. I'm now teaching everything I learned there to today's students at Nash. Everything that Mr. Peterson taught me about playing flute and percussion, that Mr. Berg taught me about singing and reading music, and that Mrs. Berg taught me about playing piano! I give so much credit to my parents who supported me in my school program and went over-and-above to also buy me my own flute and pay for my piano lessons. Thank you!

Defining Moment in my Education

When I was in 6th Grade I helped in a Kindergarten class one day. A little boy learned to count and group sticks because of me! Wow! It was so joyful to participate in that boy's education that I wanted to do it again and again. Throughout my school days, participating in musical performances and bringing joy to the audiences were my most meaningful experiences and I want to bring that joy to my new generation of students.

Core Educational Belief

I believe that all people are musical and that my job is simply to help them find and develop their own personal musical mode of expression. Some do it best with their voices, others through instruments, movement and/or dance. Even if it's listening with an educated, intelligent ear, music is part of being human.

Prior Experience

Straight out of college I taught General Education classrooms of 2nd, 3rd and 4th graders in Nebraska. I left teaching to work in industry for many years and then returned to the classroom as a 6th grade teacher. Upon moving to Arizona I obtained a certificate in Web site design but returned to my first love of teaching Music here at Nash.
