Sometimes looking into our classroom is a bit like looking into a beehive: the uninformed visitor might see lots of bees moving in many directions with no apparent logic, but the beekeeper knows what each bee is doing and how an activity fits within the overall pattern. mbailey@amphi.comGETTING YOUR CHILD READY FOR A SUCCESSFUL SCHOOL YEAR IN FIRST GRADE: 1. Please make sure that your child can follow simple, one step directions. 2. Have your child practice reading books at their level on a daily basis. Reading orally increases fluency. 3. Have your child practice writing his/her first name and last name using a capital letter at the beginning of first and last names only. Children should not be writing in all capital letters. Focus on neatness and correct formation of letters. 4. Set aside some time each day for your child to color, draw (try to enocurage and model details in drawing) or practice using crayons, markers or colored pencils. In First Grade, it is very important for all children to be able to draw, incorporate details in a drawing and to be able to tell/write about the picture. 5. Provide time to practice with your child using scissors with the thumb in the top position and the arm and elbow by the side of the body. Draw thick lines for your child to cut accurately. Cutting can be a source of frustration that can be alleviated with a little extra practice at home. Children should be able to cut on stay on lines. 6. Practice taking turns to speak and listening quietly while others are speaking. A great way to practice this is by playing games! 7. Role play sharing, encourage and encourage "how to" share with others. Remember, we are a "Kind Campus". 8. Practice asking your child questions. Ask and model how to answer questions using details in the answers. 9. For some early literacy practice, go to Starfall, for your child to practice using eductional links. 10. Read to your child every day! This is an important life-long skill.
